Scheduled Minorities

Meanwhile people from many countries live in Germany. Some non-German people live in the country for centuries. A few of them, the scheduled minorities (anerkannte Minderheiten) gained special rights, usually cultural autonomy and school lessons held in their proper language. They also get financial support either by the federal government or within their states. (Astonishingly the Eastern Frisians in Lower Saxony have according to source no privileged status). Scheduled are:

1. Sorbs in Brandenburg and Saxony: 60,000
2. Danes in Schleswig-Holstein: 50,000
3. Sinti and Roma, in all parts of the country: 50,000
4. Frisians in Schleswig-Holstein (Northern Frisia and Heligoland): 10,000
5. Frisians in Lower Saxony (Saterland) : 2,000
